Who wouldn’t like to live on an island? It is one of the most desired wish according to the col-lective imagination first of all when it is hard to hold on in the daily throng. Lake Como has its “pocket island” which had a real star role in the historical framework; on it Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, the Holy Roman Empire soldiers and the troops of the free communes beat each other down. All this fighting led to a fire which destroyed the island in 1169.

The fire wiped out not only the houses but also the Church of San Giovanni Battista. In 1435 an odd character, maybe a monk or a pilgrim, talked a native into following him on the island, ordering him to dig under a walnut tree because there he would find the church and the altar of the religious building so dear to the inhabitants of Ossuccio. If you watch the island from the lake during daylight it will look like a place of simple and harmless beauty, but when the dusk comes its shape takes on a dark aspect as if it wanted to warn the world of the curse that Vidulfo, a bishop in Como, threw centuries before. Unfortunately some people dealing with this pleasant place were struck by the curse.

King Albert of Belgium who inherited the island was really impressed by the place, so he established a non-profit organization headed by the Consul of Belgium and the President of the Academy of Brera. In 1939 three cottages in typical rationalist architecture designed by the Architect Pietro Lingeri were built for painters, sculptors, musicians who wanted to isolate themselves to give greater rein to their creativity. Even cinematographic art poked its head there on a stormy night when a Mr. Hitchcock made his appearance at the door of the renowned inn surrounded by lightings and thunders.

io e l\'isola
